Greetings from St. Louis! We have begun our second week of new missionary orientation at the LCMS International Center. Every day of the past week has been filled with much new information and many new friends for all members of our family.
One of the highlights of the week has been the opportunity to meet and get to know the many other missionary families from all over the country who have come to St. Louis to train with us and who will disperse around the globe over the coming year. In its 2013 convention the LCMS challenged itself to double its number of career missionaries by 2016, and by God’s grace our church is on track to meet and exceed that challenge. It is exciting to be part of this work together with many other members of the body of Christ.
An unexpected joy on the first day of training was to discover that one of my former students will be joining us on the mission field! Seminarian Andrew Schlund, his wife Kelsey, and their daughter Charlotte are being sent to Mexico City. Kelsey, née Wagner, is a 2007 graduate of Lutheran High School and was a member of one of my Christian Doctrine classes. Their daughter Charlotte was born this spring just a few days after our son Emmanuel.
