Playground Temporarily Closed & Swahili Bible Opened

The mountains around us received especially heavy rain this past week, causing the river by the camp to rise to its highest level since we’ve been here. No damage was done to the camp except for the fact that the kids’ playground, located right next to the river, is under water.

In Swahili classes this week we began reading the Swahili bible. Our first two stories were the temptation of Jesus in Matthew 4 and the wedding at Cana in John 2, and it took me back a little to the days of reading lessons in first grade. We’d read the story, then we’d talk about its new vocabulary and grammar, then we’d re-read it, then we’d try to re-tell it in our own words (Swahili, of course), and finally we’d ask each other questions about it. The repetition is a very effective at making things stick, both for first-graders and for grown-ups!
